Excerpt

We read with great interest the recent article by Nissen et al.1 describing biliary reconstruction in deceased donor liver transplantation. With all the recent medical advances, biliary complications continue to remain the “Achilles heel” in liver transplantation. Biliary complications, including anastomotic bile leaks, strictures, and intrahepatic biliary strictures are encountered in 10–30% of liver transplants and lead to increased morbidity and mortality.2 The incidence of biliary complications in livers from donors after cardiac death (DCD) is even higher and is up to 60% in some reported series.3
