Patients admitted to acute care departments should be monitored very closely to improve their safety. Among the five common vital signs—pulse rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiratory rate [RR] and temperature—RR is probably the most in need of continuous monitoring. Indeed, as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has pointed out [
