Training in Gastrointestinal Motility

Although gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders comprise up to 50 % of the outpatient gastroenterology practice, anecdotal evidence suggests that US programs vary considerably in the training of fellows in these disorders [1, 2]. For the trainee who has identified GI motility and functional GI disorders as a clinical focus, several opportunities exist to obtain additional training in this field during fellowship training and post-fellowship, including clinical rotations [such as the clinical training program (CTP) sponsored by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS)], observerships, industry-sponsored workshops, and advanced fellowship training. In this paper, the rationales for pursuing and potential benefits of undertaking additional GI motility training, specifically the CTP and advanced fellowship training, will be discussed. …
