Abstract

Aim

To assess the relationship between diabetes self-efficacy and self-care behaviours with glycaemic control among type II diabetes patients attending a public institute in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Subjects and methods

A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with type 2 diabetic patients at the University Diabetic Centre, King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Seventy-five eligible subjects participated in this study, from April to July 2012. Data for the Diabetes Self-care Activities Scale (SDSCA) and the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) were obtained by questionnaires completed during face-to-face interviews. HbA1c was used as an indicator of glycaemic control. Hierarchical multiple regression was undertaken to examine relationships among glycaemic control, demographic and illness characteristics, self-care behaviours and self-efficacy.

Results

Fifty-eight (77.35 %) respondents were male with a mean of 12.6 ± 8.4 years of diagnosed diabetes. The mean scores of self-efficacy and self-care behaviours were moderately low (6.96 ± 1.49 and 3.64 ± 1.06). Males had better glycaemic control than females, while patients on combination therapy had poor glycaemic control. The total self-efficacy score was a significant predictor of diabetes self-care behaviours. Self-efficacy for blood sugar monitoring appeared to be a strong predictor of glycaemic control.

Conclusion

Most respondents had low self-efficacy scores and low levels of diabetes self-care behaviours. Healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia should include aspects of self-efficacy theory when designing educational programmes that can result in improvement of self-care behaviours and hence achieve optimal glycaemic control.
