Urinary albumin excretion correlates with carotid intima-media thickness in offspring of patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria

A large body of evidences indicates albuminuria as a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) both in diabetic and in non-diabetic subjects [13]. The basic mechanisms of the link between albuminuria and CVD are not completely understood, but this relationship is widely considered to reflect the common underlying pathology of endothelial dysfunction [3]. It is also well known that the link with CVD may occur even in the presence of urinary albumin excretion (UAE) within the normal range [1, 2]. Moreover, albuminuria correlates with carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), hallmark of subclinical atherosclerosis and predictor for CVD [4]. It has been shown that the presence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in parents plays a role on the development of cIMT in offspring glucose-tolerant young adults [5]. However, it is not clear whether the presence of albuminuria in T2DM parents modulates the association between UAE and cIMT in their offspring. …
