Excerpt

The fourth edition of this comprehensive book in ophthalmology is evidence of its success. Indeed, this is a one-volume textbook that encompasses the entire clinical field. The book is divided into 12 sections that are arranged in an orderly manner from the external to the inner ocular and the periocular structures. The first section is basic science dedicated to genetics, starting with the fundamentals of human genetics and concluding with the genetics of ocular diseases, their diagnosis and genetic consultation. Other fundamentals of ophthalmology, such as anatomy, pathology, embryology, physiology, immunology, microbiology and pharmacology, were not addressed as independent entities in order to maintain the one-volume textbook format. Most of the subjects are covered meticulously. A few chapters, such as the one on phacoemulsification, may be expanded to include preparations and preoperative considerations, different stages of the procedure, and potential intra- and postoperative complications and approaches to avoid and treat them. The editors are highly prolific and respected. The chapters were written by the best specialists, most of them from the States. …
