Edwin Robert Bickerstaff was born on November 20, 1920 in Aberystwyth, Wales. He was the son of a High Sheriff of Cardiganshire and a governor of the University College of Wales. When Bickerstaff was young, his family moved to Birmingham, England, where he attended King Edward’s School in Edgbaston. Though he loved arts and was a skilled musician, Bickerstaff decided to pursue medicine. In 1943, he graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School. …
