Triple Issues Underlying Lung Injury for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Surgery

We read the impressive study by Song et al. [1] with interest. They presented the first case of the literature with an unexpected long-term complication as lung injuries due to instrumentation rod migration. Fourteen years following index anterior corrective surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the patient experienced diaphragmatic and lung injuries. Despite the hardware was removed and lung repaired with good results, the additional injuries to vital organs nearly threatened the patient’s life. Overall, the case is impressive and instructive. Moreover, the case might be a lesson for international spinal community, especially for treatment strategy decision on more invasively anterior corrective surgery. We would like to discuss several issues with Song et al., aiming for benefiting global spinal community and AIS patients. …
