Sirs: Despite the safety and effectiveness of the intra-aortic ballon pump (IABP), the IABP cannot independently support the systemic circulation in case of low cardiac output. Some patients in need of hemodynamic support do not respond to IABP therapy. Hemodynamic stability can then be obtained by a more potent cardiac assist device, like Impella catheter pump, which can independently assist the systemic circulation. This small transvalvular rotary actively pumps blood from the left ventricle (LV) into the ascending aorta [4]. …
