Cumulative diagnostic radiation exposure in children with ventriculoperitoneal shunts

The advent of CT scan during the seventies has opened a new era in neurosurgery by allowing easy and noninvasive imaging of the brain. However, imaging based on X-rays is associated with a low but poorly evaluated risk of radio-induced lesions. In the present paper, the authors present two interesting and worrisome observations of tumors suspected of being induced by diagnostic imaging in shunted patients and review the pertinent literature. This case report raises a big question mark regarding our common practice of regular X-ray imaging (CT scanner and shunt series) for the management of shunted patients. …
