After 12 very successful years as Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology, Prof. Dr Albert Baert has now retired. As Professor of the Radiology Department at Leuven, he was instrumental in the development of computed tomography and published many of the key original articles on abdominal computed tomography (CT) as well as the first textbook on dynamic contrast-enhanced CT. A past President of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in 1993 and 1995, he has been at the centre of European Radiology for several decades. He founded the permanent ECR office in Vienna in 1992 and was instrumental in helping the growth of various European educational initiatives—the EuroRad teaching collection is just one obvious example. Having built up the journal founded by the late Prof. Joseph Lissner to a remarkably high position in the world radiological literature, Professor Baert relinquished the editorship at the end of 2007. As readers will know, the impact factor of European Radiology has climbed steadily during his most productive editorship, which is a tribute to his vision and fine attention to detail. By dint of working at the journal everyday throughout the year, he has achieved remarkable progress, attracting a steady supply of ground-breaking scientific manuscripts as well as timely reviews. …
