We appreciate the opportunity to further elaborate and discuss the results of our population-based study on bile duct injury (BDI) after cholecystectomy [1]. We believe that structured training in laparoscopic cholecystectomy, frequent intraoperative cholangiography, and registration in the national quality register contributes to the low incidence of BDI reported (0.3 %; 174/55,134). An equally low incidence of BDI in Sweden has been reported previously in the study by Waage et al. based on data from the mandatory Swedish Inpatient Registry during a longer period, 1987–2001, (0.4 %; 613/152,776) [2]. …
