What Do We Know about Endomyocardial Fibrosis in Children of Africa?

Endomyocardial fibrosis is a restrictive cardiomyopathy of unknown etiology that occurs most commonly in tropical and subtropical areas, mainly in children and adolescents belonging to the poorest groups of the population [3]. It is characterized by an endocardial fibrotic thickening that predominates at the apex and inlet chamber of one or both ventricles. It is an endemic cause of heart disease in certain tropical areas, such as coastal regions of Mozambique, with a prevalence of up to 9% of the population. …
