Invasive mechanical ventilation is the cornerstone therapy for the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, because invasive mechanical ventilation is also associated with side effects and complications leading to substantial morbidity or even mortality, physicians have developed strategies to prevent endotracheal intubation.
