The successful use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) had first been reported by Hill in adults in 1972 [1], and Bartlett [2] in neonates in 1975. In 1979, a negative adult trial [2, 3] contrasted to consistently favourable results in neonates leading to the rapid adoption of neonatal ECMO in the USA. However the poor quality of the two early US trials of neonatal ECMO [4, 5] inhibited its wider diffusion with particular concerns about lack of evidence on cost-effectiveness and long-term outcomes [6]. …
