Sepsis-related bilateral diffuse renal cortical necrosis in a young female

A 23-year-old female with no known comorbidities presented to our hospital with fever, abdominal pain, loose stools, and vomiting. She had undergone excision of an infected Bartholin cyst in another hospital the previous day. Her laboratory values indicated sepsis with leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, and increased C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. On admission, she was oligo-anuric. Urinalysis was carried out on a 10 ml sample obtained by urinary bladder catheterization: results showed albuminuria of + 1, urine sugar of + 1, leukocyes 8–10/high power field, occasional red blood cells and no casts. Antiphospholipid, antinuclear and antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibodies were all negative, and complement levels were normal. …
