General paediatric surgery in Ireland: a crisis in evolution

In 2007, a 10-month old baby presented to the emergency department of an Irish County Hospital with a neck abscess. The on-call surgeons planned to drain the abscess but the on-call anesthetists were not happy to anaesthetize an infant so young. The baby was then referred to a University Hospital where the on-call surgeon was reluctant to deal with the problem as he had no paediatric experience. Following referral to a third hospital, the abscess was drained without event by appropriately trained surgeons and anaesthetists. The parents were relieved but bewildered as to why their child had to be referred to three hospitals before a relatively simple problem could be treated. …
