Herniated gravid uterus growing in an incisional hernia: study of three cases

The gravid uterus presence in an anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia is a very rare complication of pregnancy. It is a serious obstetrical situation due to the risk of uterus incarceration or strangulation. It may lead to severe maternal and fetal risks such as abortion, preterm or dysfunctional labor, and intrauterine growth retardation leading to fetal death. The management protocol depends upon the period of gestation. Conservative management is preferred till term. Here, we will report three cases of uterus hernia of a midline incision being managed in our department since its establishment in 1998. The aim of our work is to alert practicing clinicians about this rare obstetrical complication and report our experience in terms of clinical and outcome management. …
