Age-associated prevalence and risk factors of Lewy body pathology in a general population

In a community-based study, Wakisaka et al. [6], examining 102 consecutive autopsy cases, reported Lewy body (LB) pathology in 22.5%, and in 41.4% of demented patients who represented 28.4% of the total. The LB score was not significantly different between cases of dementia with LB (DLB) and non-demented subjects with LB pathology, while the Braak stages were significantly higher in demented cases. Prevalence of LB pathology increased with age. DLB cases with severe Alzheimer (AD) pathology showed increased LB score, and had poorer prognosis than those without AD changes. These data suggest that aging and severe AD pathology have a strong effect on the evolution of LB pathology. …
