In neuroimaging studies, especially for research, functional/molecular images frequently need to be spatially normalized to a brain atlas [1, 2]. This task consists of deforming the subject’s brain images in a way that the structures represented on them overlap the corresponding structures represented in the atlas. To achieve the most accurate deformation, high-resolution structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is needed. These MRI images are used to obtain the optimal geometric deformation between the subject’s brain and the reference atlas. After rigidly registering functional images with corresponding MRI for each subject, the MRI-based geometric transformation found will enable accurate mapping of the subject’s brain functional images to the atlas [1]. …
