Advancing CT and MR imaging of the lungs and airways in children: imaging into practice

Understanding the ever-accelerating evolution of imaging technologies has been a great challenge yet an essential aspect of modern day radiology practice. Although lung and airway evaluation has been obtained historically with conventional chest radiographs or fluoroscopy in infants and children, today new imaging techniques with multidetector CT [MDCT] (e.g., two-dimensional [2D] and three-dimensional [3D] reconstruction images, paired inspiratory–expiratory central airway imaging) and MRI with hyperpolarized gases [e.g., 3He and 129Xe]) have opened new ways of evaluating various lung and airway disease processes in the pediatric population. The primary objective of this presentation is to present a review of recent advances in MDCT and MRI techniques aimed at evaluating both the structure and function of lungs and airways in infants and children. …
