The early biomarker of acute kidney injury: in search of the Holy Grail

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major clinical problem with rising incidence and a high mortality rate resulting in four million attributable deaths worldwide on a yearly basis [1]. The lack of an early and effective biomarker results in a significant delay in initiating appropriate therapy [2]. A revolutionary step was taken in cardiology when various early biological markers for cardiac damage became available (including troponins), enabling the clinician to instigate early and effective treatment for acute coronary disease [3]. …
