Is ALDH1 a good method for definition of breast cancer stem cells?

In a series of recent studies, in addition to CD44 and CD24 expression, ALDH1 has been described to play a crucial role in identification of putative cancer stem cells (CSCs) and/or potential cancer initiating cells in breast cancer. The initial description of this observation was from the Max Wicha group in 2007 where Ginestier et al. describe the use of an antibody to ALDH1 as a method to identify CSCs by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Since then, many investigators have attempted to use this marker on breast cancer tissue. Here, in this issue of the journal, the work of the Badve group does a series of IHC experiments with ALDH1, but finds a unique result. …
