Adequate lymph node evaluation is a key component of post-resection pathological analysis of colonic cancer specimens. Its use and subsequent implications extend to involve three major aspects of clinical care: staging, prognosis and quality control. The application and propriety of nodal evaluation are completely distinct with respect to these three areas, and the significance within each should not be confused. Additionally, it is important to be aware that there are numerous factors which account for inter-patient variability in nodal yield, and these may be broadly categorised into those pertaining to surgeon, pathologist or patient.
