Sumatriptan belongs to a class of agents that are serotonin 5-HT1 agonists, which are thought to exert their effects by constricting cranial blood vessels and inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators. Sumatriptan was the first of a number of drugs in this class that are available for the treatment of migraine. It is available as an injectable for subcutaneous administration, an oral tablet, a suppository for rectal administration and as a nasal spray. The different dosage forms allow sumatriptan administration to be adapted to patient preference. …
