Acute Respiratory Viral Infections in Children after COVID-19 Pandemic: What has Changed?

The burden and infectivity of SARS CoV-2 infection enforced non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) to control the spread. The wide-spread use of face masks, social distancing, restriction of schools and daycare centres during 2020 and early 2021 led to significant interruption of transmission of respiratory infections other than SARS CoV-2. A surge of acute respiratory infection in children was seen as NPI measures and restrictions were removed in late 2021. Data from respiratory viral infections in children from Portugal showed narrow peak during winter season between November and March from 2018–19 and 2019–20, and no peak in 2020–21 which was followed by out of season, early and prolonged rise from September 2021 to May 2023 [
