Delirium, a complex acute confusional state that affects one-third to half of intensive care unit (ICU) patients, is associated with numerous adverse outcomes, including longer hospital stays, prolonged symptom burden, and increased risk for persistent cognitive impairment [
1]. Recent studies that accounted for daily severity of illness [
2] and hospital readmissions [
3] found no significant relationship between delirium in the ICU and subsequent 1-year mortality, but early studies suggested delirium during critical illness may increase the long-term risk of death [

5]. Additionally, randomized trials have shown that the acute management of ICU patients can impact long-term survival [
6], an outcome of great importance to patients and their families. Thus, clinicians remain very interested in the possibility that treatment of delirium acutely can improve long-term outcomes. …
