GIST: Not Just for Surgeons Anymore!

Like most sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) historically have been best treated by surgeons. Indeed, no other physicians could offer any meaningfully effective therapy, as these tumors are even more radio- and chemotherapy resistant than other connective tissue malignancies. Imatinib mesylate changed everything, and not just for the few thousand GIST patients treated yearly. The discovery that characterizing the molecular driving force behind a tumor could lead to its exploitation as a therapeutic target changed the way we do cancer research. …
