Abstract

Purpose of review

To assess the effect of nutritional status on periodontal health in the elderly from longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials in 2000-2020.

Recent findings

Periodontal diseases, especially periodontitis, are believed to be linked with several systemic diseases and depended largely on host systemic conditions. Many researchers reported associations between nutritional intakes and periodontal health; however, the causal relationship has not been evaluated.

Summary

Ten longitudinal studies from four different populations were included in this systematic review. No eligible randomized controlled trials on the topic were found. Vitamin C, E, β-carotene, DHA, high fiber foods, and serum albumin concentration may be protective factors; n-6 to n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) ratio, saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and sweets may be risk factors for the worsening of periodontal conditions of older persons. However, the results were inconsistent across the studies. In conclusion, there was an insufficient amount of evidence to claim the casual effects of nutritional status on periodontal health in the elderly.
