Gender-Specific Attitudes of Internal Medicine Residents Toward Careers in Gastroenterology

In this issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Advani and coauthors, in their study entitled “Gender-Specific Attitudes of Internal Medicine Residents Toward Gastroenterology,” sought to determine the barriers perceived by internal medicine trainees electing (or not electing) to pursue careers in gastroenterology, the first publication of its kind [1]. The trainees were principally based in the northeastern US, and the 253 respondents were equally distributed between community-based and university-based programs. Approximately, half of trainees were graduates of US medical schools, and nearly half of respondents were interns. …
