ICG Fluorescence Navigation Surgery in Gastric Cancer: Role and Relevance

We read with interest the randomized controlled trial (RCT) “Safety and efficacy of Indocyanine green (ICG) tracer-guided lymph node dissection during laparoscopic radical gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer” by Chen et al. [
1] from a single high-volume center performing annually 800 gastrectomies. The mean number of nodes retrieved in the ICG arm was significantly higher than that in the non-ICG (50.5 vs 42,
P < 0.001) with comparable surgical morbidity in both the arms. Similarly, noncompliance rate was lower in the ICG arm (31.8% vs 57.4%,
P < 0.001). The authors need to be commended for conducting the first RCT of its kind. We have a few comments on this article. …
