Arterial-venous extracorporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a rescue tool in acute heart failure after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) when separation from CPB cannot be achieved by conventional means (volume, inotropes, intra-aortic counterpulsation IABP).
