A workshop was conducted by the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) Working Group on Demographic Change and Care of Older People/Institut National D’Études Démographiques (INED) on ‘Demographic and Social Change: Implications for Support and Well-Being of Older People in Europe’, organised by Emily Grundy, Patrick Festy and Cecilia Tomassini and held at INED in Paris on 1–3 September 2004. At a previous meeting of EAPS in Warsaw in 2003, organised by the Working Group on Demographic Change and Care of Older People, it was discovered that there were numerous groups throughout Europe conducting research in this area. Consequently the aim of the workshop was to bring together those groups identified at the meeting and to learn more about their research. In addition to some individual research presentations, a special meeting was held to exchange information about the various European networks and research projects investigating demographic change and support for older persons. The aim of the meeting was to (a) exchange information on the work being currently carried out in Europe on various aspects of social support for older people, (b) discuss data sets used and/or data collected, (c) disseminate research findings and (d) discuss future directions. Presentations were made by the following groups (presented in alphabetical order; Table 1):
