The fluoroscopic study of the esophagus has come a long, long way since medical student Walter B. Cannon watched a dog swallow pearl buttons in December of 1896 [
1]. For much of the twentieth century, a “barium swallow” was
the way that medicine examined the esophagus. The advent of endoscopy, manometry, and esophageal pH monitoring rightfully prompts reassessment of fluoroscopy’s proper role in the evaluation of esophageal disease, including gastroesophageal reflux disease. Is the esophagram still relevant? …
