A 12-year-old white boy was admitted for severe dyspnoea, fever, and progressive asthenia. Laboratory studies showed white cell count 93.2 × 103/μl with 41.4% eosinophils (absolute value 38.6 × 103/μl). Workup for secondary causes of hypereosinophilia, including bone marrow aspiration, was negative. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiogram showed severe asymmetric left-ventricular apical hypertrophy with complete obliteration during systole, and transmitral Doppler flow showed restrictive pattern. …
