We read with great interest the article by Calloway et al. [
1], which retrospectively reviewed treatment data among patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) at a tertiary inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinic. The investigators demonstrated that depressive symptoms (defined as PHQ-9 score ≥ 10) at initiation of anti-tumor necrosis factor therapy were associated with medication noncompliance over a 2-year period, after controlling for age, sex, disease type, and history of psychiatric disease. As the authors argued, these results demonstrate the importance of screening for depression, and suggest a role for implementing psychosocial care to enhance medication compliance, and hopefully improve medical outcomes, in IBD. …
