Four methods to study the motion of the lower lip and tongue when decoupled from mandible movement are presented: (1) 3D position estimation (3DPE), which uses three lower-jaw sensors; (2) estimated rotation method (ERM), which uses a single lower-jaw sensor; (3) linear subtraction method (LSM), which uses a single lower-jaw sensor; and (4) Jaw and Oral Analysis (JOANA), which uses a single lower-jaw sensor. The 3DPE method demonstrated the fewest errors but requires more than one sensor to be attached to the lower jaw. JOANA, a single-sensor method, was most comparable to 3DPE and was found to be an effective method to decouple lower lip and tongue motion from mandible motion. ERM had a less complicated procedure for attaching the lower-jaw incisor sensor than did JOANA and, thus, is a viable alternative. LSM should be avoided, when possible, due to inaccuracies associated with lip and tongue motions. …
