The following educational gaps have been identified to demonstrate need for this journal continuing education activity:-
Despite dramatic advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac disease, the incidence of sudden cardiac death accounts for approximately 50 percent of all cardiovascular deaths each year.
-
Sudden cardiac death describes a sequence of events rather than a specific disease entity, and its mechanism and causes are variable and often unknown, making identification of at-risk patients challenging and limiting attempts at prevention.
-
A parameter other than left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is needed to better select patients at risk for lethal ventricular arrhythmias who need an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
