Abstract

Although seroma is a common complication following breast augmentation surgery, it is very rare in the late period (> 1 year) after implant removal. Here, we present bilateral seromas mimicking breast implants that developed 2 years after explantation. A 55-year-old female patient presented with bilateral round implant-like formations in the breasts. It was learned that the patient had undergone breast surgery three times before. First, she had undergone breast augmentation with textured round silicone breast implants 20 years before. Second, she had undergone implant removal 4 years prior because of painful capsule contracture. Finally, she had undergone seroma evacuation 2 years before. We performed surgical exploration and total capsulectomy to rule out malignancy. While restoring the shape of the breast with mastopexy, malignancy was ruled out. No recurrence was observed at the 1-year follow-up visit. We recommend complete removal of the regenerative layer via total capsulectomy is the most appropriate surgical option to prevent the recurrence of seroma.
