An Effective Way to Treat Hyperammonemic Encephalopathy Complicated Post-Distal Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Morbid obesity has received much publicity in recent years; a third of the world’s population are classified as overweight or obese [1]. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has been accepted as an effective treatment for morbid obesity, while weather distal Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (DRYGB) contributes to more excess weight loss compared with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass remains controversial [2]. Hyperammonemic encephalopathy (HAE) is one of the nutritional complications following bariatric surgery, which is rare but devastating [3]. In our medical center, we have observed one patient with HAE after distal RYGB. Treated with multiple conservative therapies, her situation remained unstable and thus, we used an effective approach, laparoscopic gastrostomy, to improve her nutritional state by enteral nutrition and assist her recovery from HAE. …
