Abstract

General Practitioners [GPs] are the corner stone of healthcare system in India. They cater to the most of the middle and lower socioeconomic population for diabetic care. We studied their current practice for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) management and compared to standard guidelines. This study was conducted on 77 GPs in western Vadodara, by personal interview using a questionnaire based on 2012 guidelines of American diabetes association [ADA] and standard medical books. The result showed that GPs are well updated about symptoms and screening of type 2 DM considering their wide clinical practice. However they lack effective approach towards screening and treatment of complications. Non pharmacological measures are under used and not advised in detail. Use of ARB/ACE inhibitor to treat hypertension in diabetic patient is still poor. Interpretation of test results for screening of disease and its complications is not satisfactory.. This study provides information about areas where they could improve. It will help us to address the problem of delay in diagnosis and treatment of disease and its complications.

WHO estimates that half of all patients worldwide are non-adherent to their prescribed medication. The consequences of poor adherence can be catastrophic, on both the individual and population level.

Join our expert panel to discover why you need to understand the drivers of non-adherence in your patients, and how you can optimize medication adherence in your clinics to drastically improve patient outcomes.
