Fracture-related infection (FRI) is one of the most serious problems in orthopaedic care. The incidence of FRI is estimated to be 3%, but may be as high as 45%, depending on comorbidities (diabetes, vascular disease, smoking) and the extent of the injury (presence of severe soft tissue injuries).
