A 77 year-old male presented to our institution for evaluation of lower extremity edema. An inferior vena cava filter (IVC) was placed 8 years earlier due to the presence of unilateral deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Duplex ultrasound revealed chronic bilateral DVT of the lower extremities. Physical examination revealed grossly dilated superficial veins of the abdomen and chest (Figs. 1, 2). IVC thrombosis was suspected. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed complete IVC filter thrombosis. The patient was managed supportively.
