Abstract

A 53-year-old Japanese man with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the thoracic esophagus underwent a subtotal esophagectomy with gastric tube reconstruction through the posterior mediastinum. The staging was T3N0M0. Gastrointestinal endoscopy 6 months after surgery revealed a submucosal lesion in the gastric tube used for reconstruction. A biopsy yielded a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, consistent with metastasis from the esophageal carcinoma. Despite chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patient died of bleeding 11 months after initial surgery. We report the clinical, endoscopic, and computed tomographic findings in this patient with intramural gastric-tube metastasis.
