The use of lasers in medicine is a melting pot. Ophthalmology and dermatology, the specialties initially and significantly employing laser as a treatment instrument, have established a wide variety of applications with a range of lasers and wavelengths, and yet, new developments are regularly forthcoming. This impressively produced book, now in its third edition, provides a comprehensive and reasonably up-to-date review of medical lasers, not only as a treatment modality, but in the rapidly expanding area of diagnostics. Lasers do not always provide the optimum modality for a particular procedure, and several chapters in the book present a much needed balance on the relative values, as well as the disadvantages and hazards of treatments, even in experienced hands. …
