This major massive work attempts to review the overall care of the trauma patient. It is divided into two volumes, each of which is roughly 1,000 pages long. The editors—all accomplished anesthetists and intensivists—and section editors are heavily weighted toward past and current faculty from the University of California at San Diego. Importantly, these editors hail from an area where the care of the trauma patient has been ahead of the rest of the United States in many ways: San Diego was the first large city to develop a sophisticated system of regionalized prehospital trauma triage. …
