The practice of medicine has long been an empiric enterprise. In 1996, Sackett et al. [1] immortalized a new concept they called evidence-based medicine (EBM). They defined it as “the conscientious and judicious use of current best evidence from clinical care research in the management of individual patients.” The history of EBM, chronologically detailed through its evolution in this review, tells us that the concept has been on surgeons’ minds for years but has come to fruition in the electronic age. …
