Aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) converts l-dopa to dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptophan to serotonin. Deficiency of this enzyme, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, leads to decreased brain levels of these neurotransmitters and resultant developmental disorder.
