There continues to be controversy regarding the significance of the presence of minimal extrathyroidal extension (ETE) for thyroid cancer operative specimens and whether this finding on final pathology is a predictor of worse outcomes for patients with thyroid cancer. While there are data showing that ETE, minimal or gross, is associated with a higher incidence of central neck nodal disease and this is, in turn, associated with an increased risk in persistent or recurrent disease if not treated appropriately, the presence of minimal ETE does not appear to change patient disease survival [1, 2]. …
