Tracheal ring fracture and herniation with PercuTwist percutaneous dilator

Sir: We would like to report three cases of tracheal ring fracture and prolapse during percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT) using the PercuTwist kit (Rusch, Kernen, Germany). The original study reported this technique to be a quick and safe dilation procedure without any serious bleeding complications or other relevant procedure-related adverse consequences [1]. In our series of 70 cases performed to date (35 Ciaglia Blue Rhino; 35 PercuTwist), we have encountered three dilation-related complications, all associated with the PercuTwist technique. …
